Frequently Asked Questions

What does “Là Lá” mean?

“Là lá” is Vietnamese for “is leaf.” The name reflects what we work with — fallen palm sheaths and sea grape leaves — and the simplicity of transformation: discarded plant matter becomes functional tableware through patient craft.

What materials do you use?

We work with two materials, both sourced from Vietnam’s central coast: palm leaf sheaths that fall naturally from trees, and sea grape leaves gathered from coastal provinces like Phú Yên. Both are cleaned and pressed into form using heat and pressure, no chemicals, resins, or coatings.

What’s the difference between palm leaf and sea grape?

Palm leaf sheaths are larger and sturdier, with distinctive wood-like grain patterns. Sea grape leaves are smaller, with visible leaf veins and a reddish-green hue. Both are fully biodegradable.

Are any trees cut to make these pieces?

No. Palm trees shed their sheaths naturally several times a year. Sea grape leaves are gathered after falling. No trees are cut and no branches are removed.

Can I use them for hot or oily foods?

Yes. Both materials hold hot meals, oils, and sauces well. For very liquid dishes, we recommend serving within an hour.

How do I care for this tableware?

These pieces are designed for single use. For light, dry servings, they may be gently wiped before disposal. Washing, soaking, or high heat will weaken the material. Compost where possible.

Are these pieces truly biodegradable?

Yes. Because the material contains no additives or coatings, it breaks down naturally. In composting conditions, pieces typically decompose in 60–90 days.

Do you use any chemicals, coatings, or PFAS?

No. The process uses only natural material, water, heat, and pressure. The surface that touches your food is untreated plant fiber.

How are the pieces made?

Material is collected after it falls naturally, then washed, dried, and shaped using heat and pressure. Final edges are trimmed by hand. No chemicals, resins, or binders are used.

Why does each piece look different?

Every sheath and leaf carries marks of its growth — grain, tone, season. These variations are inherent and preserved rather than standardized.

Where do you ship?

We ship within Canada and to select international destinations. Shipping rates and timelines vary by region and are calculated at checkout.

How long does production take?

Each piece is made to order. Production typically takes 60 days, after which your order is prepared for shipment.

What is your return policy?

Due to the handmade nature of each item, we do not accept returns. If your piece arrives damaged, contact us within 48 hours with photographs and we will arrange a replacement.

Who makes these pieces?

Artisan communities in Vietnam’s Quảng Ngãi and Phú Yên provinces. Knowledge is passed through family lineage and local cooperatives.

What does “centuries of practice” mean?

Vietnam’s craft villages have used plant materials for utilitarian objects – including hats, baskets, and household items – for several hundred years. Our methods are rooted in these longstanding traditions and adapted for contemporary use.

How do you ensure fair practices?

We work directly with artisan cooperatives, ensuring transparent compensation and working conditions. No intermediaries are involved.
